The UK's inflation rate has risen to 2.9% in the year to July, driven by a sharp increase in energy bills, with gas prices soaring at their fastest pace in almost four years. This increase has been attributed to the US-Israel war with Iran, which has restricted global oil supplies, leading to higher energy costs.

## Energy Price Pressures

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reported that energy costs surged after the conflict began, resulting in an increase in the cap on household energy bills in July. The price cap on gas and electricity costs was increased by 13% by Ofgem, the energy regulator, adding £221 a year to the typical bill. Experts predict that homes will see a 4% rise in energy bills from October, taking them to the highest level since July 2023.

The ongoing uncertainty over the US-Iran conflict, which has seen effective closures of the Strait of Hormuz, a key trading passage for ships carrying oil, liquefied natural gas, and other commodities, is expected to continue putting pressure on energy prices. Additionally, the ongoing heatwave across Europe is increasing gas demand for power generation to meet air conditioning and cooling demand, further compounding energy price pressures.

## Inflation Outlook

Despite the rise in inflation, experts do not expect the Bank of England to change its key interest rate at its next meeting in September. The inflation figure is still above the Bank's 2% target, which is considered necessary to keep prices stable and allow both people and businesses to plan for the future. However, some economists predict that inflation will fall to the target by the end of next year, provided energy prices do not rise much further.

## Economic Impact

The rise in inflation is expected to have a significant impact on the UK economy, with rising energy costs and food prices eating into household budgets. The cost of living crisis is affecting not only those on benefits but also working people, with the need for affordable food now reaching across every part of the community. Experts warn that drought-related increases in food prices may also be on the horizon, further exacerbating the crisis.
